LIFE Programme

LIFE Europe FlagThe EU funding programme LIFE (L'Instrument Financier pour l'Environnement) supports projects in the environmental sector. It acts as a link between research in environmental and climate protection and large-scale implementation with the help of other EU support programmes.

For the funding period 2021-2027, the LIFE budget is €5.4 billion.

The programme features two thematic priorities, Environment and Climate, with four sub-programmes:

  1. Nature and Biodiversity
  2. Circular Economy and Quality Of Life
  3. Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
  4. Clean Energy Transition

The programme period 2021-2027 features the following changes compared to the previous period:

  • As with the Horizon Europe research framework programme, applications will be submitted via the EU Commission's Funding & Tenders Portal.
  • The application procedure will be predominantly single-stage. Applicants will need to submit full proposals instead of short proposals.
  • The sub-programme "Energy Transition" funds projects similar to those previously funded under Horizon 2020 as CSAs.

LIFE projects are co-financed projects in which up to 60% of the eligible costs can stem from EU funding.
