European Territorial Cooperation

The INTERREG VI programme is currently being prepared. In the programming period 2021-2027, the programme will focus on 4 overarching policy objectives:

  • a greener, CO2-free Europe;
  • a more social Europe;
  • a Europe closer to its citizens;
  • a better governance.

In the INTERREG VI programme generation running from 2021 to 2027, regional cooperation will be continued in three strands, as in the INTERREG V programme:

  • at the cross-border level as strand A;
  • at the transnational level as strand B;
  • and as INTERREG Europe as part of interregional cooperation.

INTERREG A funds cross-border projects. Cooperation in this segment aims to promote the emergence of cross-border economic and social priorities based on joint strategies for sustainable territorial development. The programme is divided into so-called cooperation areas, which extend along the national external borders of the EU states. Parts of the state of Baden-Württemberg are part of the following cooperation areas:



The aim of transnational cooperation is to reconcile national, regional and local concerns with the European interest in the strategic development of larger, transnational areas. Baden-Württemberg is involved in the following cooperation areas:

  • Alpine Space
    The first call of the Interreg Alpine Space Programme for the submission of project proposals is open. The aim is to work on potentials and challenges in the Alpine Space. There are two types of projects: classic projects and small projects. Deadline for submission of classic projects is 18 February 2022 and for small projects 28 April 2022.   • Danube region
    The first project outlines for this funding periode are expected to be submitted from end 2021 / beginning 2022.
  • Northwest Europe
    The first project outlines for this funding periode are expected to be submitted from spring 2022.
  • Central Europe
    Interreg Central Europe programme launched the first call of the new funding periode 2021.With the opening of the call, all necessary documents (programme manual, terms of reference, application form, etc.) will also be published. The deadline for submission is 23 February 2022. Further information on the call can be found here.

The German federal programme Transnational Cooperation supports INTERREG B projects that pursue an integrated and spatially effective approach.



INTERREG Europe supports interregional cooperation between all European regions. The entire territory of the European Union is eligible for project funding. Partners from Norway and Switzerland can also be considered.
