German as a Foreign Language II

Target Group

This course is designed for doctoral candidates who have completed level A1.1 and leads to level A1.2 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR).

You can reach level A1 within two semesters taking “German I” (= A1.1) and the continuation “German II” (= A1.2) during the following semester.

Goals

This is a general language course, i.e., you will learn both oral and written communication skills. The focus will be on the productive skills, i.e., on speaking and writing. In doing so, this course is oriented towards the communicative goals of the CEFR while at the same time promoting independent learning.

 

Topics

Topics to be covered will include: life at work; health and fitness; living in the city; jobs and occupations; fashion and clothes; holidays and weather.

You will learn more basic forms and structures, such as the perfect tense, imperative forms, more modal verbs (“sollen”, “müssen”, “(nicht) dürfen”), articles and personal pronouns in the dative case, demonstrative and interrogative pronouns, more temporal and local prepositions, and sentence connectors (“und”, “oder”, “aber”, “denn”).

Course participants are required to purchase the following textbook:

Absences

You are allowed to miss a maximum of 20 % of the entire duration of the course. Please notify the qualification programme of your absences (see conditions for participation).
