State Graduate Funding

The state-funded scholarships of the Landesgraduiertenförderung are awarded for the promotion of highly qualified junior scientists and researchers. The universities are responsible for awarding scholarships under the LGFG.

Call for Applications 2023

Application deadline is 21st April 2023, 12 am at Albert-Ludwigs-University’s letterbox or the University‘s mailroom. Our receipt stamp is valid and not the date stamp of the post office!

Applications submitted later will not be considered.

 

Eligibility for Funding

Eligible for funding are doctoral candidates of all faculties.

Type of Funding

Scholarship (without employment)
Tax free, not subject to social insurance contributions

Amount of Funding

Scholarship in the amount of 1300 euros per month (including an allowance for material costs and travel expenses). Scholarship recipients with children receive an additional amount of 300 euros per month for one child increased by 100 euros for every further child.

Period of Funding

Regular scholarships: a funding period of 24 months, which can be extended up to twelve months. Begin of funding is always 1st October or 1st November.

An Additional Year of Funding for Parents: Another twelve months extension is possible for parents upbringing a child under 14 years.

Completion scholarships: doctoral candidates who plan to submit their dissertation at the end of winter semester and need completion funding. Up to five months funding period between 1st August and 31st December.

Application Process

Your complete application documents (see list and link below) must be submitted in duplicate within the application period (21st April 2023, 12 am) to the International Graduate Academy (IGA) at Freiburg Research Services:

  1. one version by post or personal and originally signed

    and

  2. one version via email as pdf file.


Any applications received after this deadline unfortunately cannot be considered.


Please make sure to be informed as early as possible about the dates of your faculty's doctoral committees in order to receive your certificate of acceptance as a doctoral candidate from your home faculty in good time, as the process can take up to several months.


The central grants commission holds a meeting in June/July to decide on all applications received. After the commission makes its decision, the IGA will inform you as soon as possible whether and for what time period your application has been considered. If all formalities are done, the amount of funding is generally transferred to your bank account at the beginning of each month.

Please note: If you will be in an employment relationship with the University of Freiburg while receiving the scholarship or if you plan to enter into an employment relationship with the University during this period, you must notify the Human Resources Department of the scholarship as early as possible.
