Pre-announcements

Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)

The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) is a public-private partnership in Horizon Europe and is co-funded by the EU and industrial partners. Any institution in the EU or in one of the countries associated to Horizon Europe is eligible and Horizon Europe rules for consortia apply.

A special feature of IHI projects is that additional industry partners who are members of IHI are required to join the consortium and contribute at least 45% of the project budget.

The (IHI) has published draft topics for the planned call 4. Changes may be expected before the publication of the calls, which is planned for summer 2023. IHI call 4 is likely to include two topics (with a two-stage procedure).

Exclusion of Hungarian higher education institutions from Horizon Europe

As of 15.12.2022, there is a number of Hungarian higher education institutions that are no longer eligible for Horizon Europe funding until further notice. The complete list of affected institutions as well as background information on this restriction can be found here (German language).

Guidelines for the use of Open Access

Horizon 2020

The EU Commission has published a guide for handling Open Access (OA) in scientific publications and research data in Horizon 2020. For all scientific publications arising from projects funded under Horizon 2020, Open Access publication is mandatory, either via the so-called Gold OA (publication in an open access journal), or the Green OA (making the publication or accepted manuscript available in an open access repository, in parallel with or shortly after the "conventional" publication of the article in a journal).

The EU Commission also requests that the underlying data is made accessible to enable the verification and reproduction of the published results.

Horizon Europe

In Horizon Europe, the accessibility of research results and data to the general public is gaining in importance. This results in changes for researchers that have to be taken into account as early as the proposal phase:

• A Data Management Plan must be included;
• Only the costs for publications in Open Access journals (Gold OA) will be reimbursable.

The EU Commission offers researchers the Open Research Europe platform to enable publishing their articles and thus complying with the Open Access requirements.

Register as an external expert for proposal evaluation

For the program period 2021-2027, the EU Commission is looking for experts who are interested in becoming proposal evaluators. The experts will be involved in the evaluation of submitted project proposals, programme evaluation and policy development. Interested persons already registered in the database are invited to update their profile.

We may provide financial support to interested researchers of the University of Freiburg for activities related to the European Union. Funds might also be available for funding travel to initiate partnerships in the field of education or to participate in informative events. We strongly recommend contacting us at an early stage.

Lesser-known opportunity for researchers: service contracts of EU institutions

In addition to calls for proposals, the EU institutions regularly publish calls for service contracts (tenders) that could also be of interest to scientists at the University of Freiburg. This includes studies and analyses on a wide range of topics across all scientific disciplines.

These tenders are published in the EU's Official Journal S, which appears six times a week and is accessible online via the EU's Tenders Electronic Daily (TED) information service. Searching for relevant contracts is possible after prior free registration via a search mask. The following settings should be used: Search area: "All current notices"; Contract: "Service contract"; Regulation: "European institution/agency or international organization".

In addition, this website of the EU Commission offers the possibility to search for contracts according to individual subject areas.
