Brexit and Switzerland: Handling EU research projects

Horizon Europe

Full association with Horizon Europe is foreseen for the United Kingdom (UK). Institutions from the UK will be able to participate in collaborative projects from the very first calls under Horizon Europe. The corresponding association agreement will enter into force retroactively as of 01.01.2021. The UK Government guarantees funding for successful applicants. Further information is provided by the EU Commission here and by the funding organisation UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) here and here.

Switzerland's planned association to the Horizon Europe framework programme will now be replaced by a limited participation as a non-associated third country. The following changes will apply to calls for proposals in 2021, including closed calls:

  • Swiss institutions can participate in multi-beneficiary projects (RIA, IA, ERC Synergy Grants, MSCA Cofunds, MSCA Doctoral Networks, MSCA) as "Associate Partners" and thus do not count as project partners. In this case, participation will be financed through Swiss funds. A role as project coordinator won’t be possible for the Swiss "Associate Partners".
  • In some exceptional cases (when stated in the respective topic text), Swiss institutions may participate in Coordination and Support Actions (CSA).
  • Researchers at swiss instituions will not be eligible for individual funding measures (ERC Grants, MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, EIC instruments). An exception are the applications already submitted in 2021 for ERC Starting Grants and ERC Consolidator Grants, which will be covered by Swiss funding if successful.
  • Switzerland can be included as a host country for the outgoing phase of a MSCA Global Fellowship.

Here you may find further information on Swiss Horizon Europe participation (Last update January 2022):

Horizon 2020

UK institutions remain eligible to participate and receive funding until the end of Horizon 2020 and until the end of the duration of the individual projects. This applies to both collaborative and individual funding schemes (MSCA and ERC grants).
