State Graduate Funding

The state-funded scholarships of the Landesgraduiertenförderung are awarded for the promotion of highly qualified junior scientists and researchers. The universities are responsible for awarding scholarships under the LGFG.

Eligibility for Funding

Eligible for funding are doctoral candidates of all faculties.


Type of Funding

Scholarship (without employment)

Tax free, not subject to social insurance contributions


Amount of Funding

Scholarship in the amount of 1300 euros per month (including an allowance for materials and travel expenses). Scholarship recipients with one child receive an additional amount of 160 euros per month, those with two or more children 210 euros per month.


Period of Funding

Regular scholarships: Maximum of 36 months

An Additional Year of Funding for Parents: Maximum of 12 months

Completion scholarships: Up to six months


Application Process

The application will take place as part of a two-stage process. In a first step please submit your complete application documents (see list and link below) within the application period (usually in April/May) to the International Graduate Academy (IGA) at Freiburg Research Services:

  1. by post or personal and originally signed as well as
  2. via email as pdf file.

The central grants commission holds a meeting in July/August to decide on all applications received. The next meeting of the grants commission is in the beginning of April. Any applications received after this deadline unfortunately cannot be considered. After the commission makes its decision, the IGA will inform you as soon as possible whether and for what time period your application has been considered. In case of a positive decision, in a second step you have to submit all remaining documents (see list and link below) postal or personal to the International Graduate Academy (IGA) at Freiburg Research Services. If all formalities are done, the amount of funding is generally transferred to your bank account at the beginning of each month.


Call for Applications 2019

The International Graduate Academy is awarding scholarships as per the State Law on Graduate Funding (LGFG) in two funding categories depending on whether funds are available:

  1. Regular Doctoral Scholarships: a funding period of 24 months, which can be extended up to twelve months. Another twelve months extension is possible for parents upbringing a child under 14 years.
    Begin of funding is 1 October or 1 November 2019.


  1. Completion Scholarships for Completing a Dissertation: doctoral candidates who plan to submit their dissertation at the end of winter semester 2019/2020 and need completion funding. Up to six months funding period between 1 August 2019 and 31 January 2020.

Application deadline is 17 May 2019, 3 pm at Albert-Ludwigs-University’s letterbox or the University‘s mailroom. Our receipt stamp is valid and not the date stamp of the post office!
Applications submitted later will not be considered.

Please do not staple your application documents.

Only complete applications received within the deadline will be passed on to the commissions for review. A screening of your documents in advance of the deadline is not possible. If you have any questions concerning the scholarships, please contact us before submitting your application.
